Mrs. Scolis and the rest of the team are pleased to inform us that they are raising money for pediatric epilepsy research at CHOP (Children's Hospital of Philadelphia). They worked with the student council to create a week of fun activities as a way to bring more awareness to Epilepsy. This fundraiser ran through November 11th-November 15th. Students showed pride for their country when they wore red, blue, and white on Monday, November 11th. Students showed off their crazy socks on Wednesday, November 13th. On Thursday, November 14th, all of the students enjoyed themselves while they wore Philly gear to show support for their favorite teams. Homeroom teachers were asked to give every student a DOMinate epilepsy shirt for the most important day, Friday, November 15th. Students participated in an assembly, a dance party, a dodgeball game of students vs. students, a snowman craft, class computer games, and a student vs. teacher dodgeball game. Each of these activities helped raise awareness and money for epilepsy. "People need to realize there are more people with epilepsy than you think." Ms. Wilson, the 6th grade B team English teacher explained when I asked her why raising awareness for epilepsy is important. Ms. Wilson was part of the team that set up a schedule of activities and created online review games."We worked together to plan these activities," she said when I asked her how she accomplished creating the events for the Purple Out. Ms. Wilson truly believes raising awareness for epilepsy is important. "I think awareness for epilepsy is important because it helps raise money for this cause," Ms. Wilson said when I asked her why awareness for epilepsy is important. Although Ms. Wilson doesn't have any personal experiences with epilepsy, she has had many students and basketball players with epilepsy in the past. "I also did this to support Mrs. Scolis and her grandson," Ms. Wilson said. Epilepsy needs more awareness! Its research needs more funding, people need to know that having epilepsy is normal, and people need to know what to do when someone with epilepsy has a seizure. Below is an anonymous survey about DOM dollars. Please don't hesitate to fill it out. I would really appreciate it! Although this Dominate epilepsy week was a big hit, for our school raised around $3,000, others still need to be aware of epilepsy. Think about what you could do to spread awareness for epilepsy!
